Mateo Retegui is close to finalizing a Serie A move from Genoa to Atalanta, where he will join five other Italian players aiming to establish themselves as regulars in Luciano Spalletti’s national team.
Retegui set to become the sixth Italy prospect at Atalanta.
Atalanta already boasted a solid group of Italy internationals before finalizing the deal for Retegui, including fellow striker Gianluca Scamacca. However, Scamacca is anticipated to be sidelined for at least six months due to a severe cruciate ligament injury sustained in a pre-season friendly against Parma on Sunday.
Atalanta have also strengthened their attacking lineup with the acquisition of 19-time Italy international Nicolo Zaniolo, who joined after a season on loan at Aston Villa in the Premier League.
Giorgio Scalvini, who is currently recovering from an ACL injury, had earned eight international caps before his injury just prior to EURO 2024.
Two additional Italy prospects will be playing in Bergamo next season. Promising young goalkeeper Marco Carnesecchi, who received his first call-up to the senior Azzurri squad under Roberto Mancini in 2022, will be among them.
Left-wing-back Matteo Ruggeri is also aiming for his first senior cap in the 2024-25 season. He was reportedly considered for selection before EURO 2024 but was ultimately left out by coach Spalletti.
