Martin Zubimendi declines Liverpool transfer to remain at Real Sociedad.

Real Sociedad midfielder Martin Zubimendi has refused a switch to Liverpool; the Reds are the sole Premier League club still to make a summer acquisition; new manager Arne Slot is seeking a new No. 6 in midfield.

Liverpool midfield target Martin Zubimendi has rejected a transfer to Anfield to remain with Real Sociedad.

It was anticipated that the Spain international, who had a £51m release clause in his contract at Anoeta Stadium, would depart the La Liga club this summer.

However, Sociedad were keen to retain Zubimendi, and the 25-year-old has chosen to stay with the Basque club after being presented with a new contract offering higher wages.

It remains to be seen if Liverpool, who are the only Premier League club yet to make a transfer this summer, will shift their focus to other midfield targets.

Meanwhile, new Reds head coach Arne Slot can rely on players like Ryan Gravenberch, Curtis Jones, Alexis Mac Allister, Dominik Szoboszlai, and Wataru Endo for midfield positions. Additionally, right-back Trent Alexander-Arnold was frequently used in that role under the previous manager Jurgen Klopp from the previous season.

Zubimendi was a member of the Spain squad that claimed victory in Euro 2024.

Zubimendi excelled in the Euro 2024 final against England when he substituted Rodri at halftime, helping Spain secure a 2-1 victory.

The midfielder has been with Sociedad since 2011 and contributed to the club’s sixth-place finish last season, netting four goals in 31 appearances.
