The Citizens won 7-6 in the penalty shootout.
LONDON: Manchester City, the reigning champions, defeated FA Cup winners Manchester United 7-6 in a penalty shootout to claim the Community Shield at Wembley on Saturday. The traditional season opener had ended 1-1 in regular time.
United had several opportunities to score first and finally succeeded in the 82nd minute when 20-year-old substitute Alejandro Garnacho broke through City’s defense and placed the ball into the bottom corner of the net.
Erik ten Hag’s team seemed set to repeat their surprise win over City from last season’s FA Cup final, but midfielder Bernardo Silva scored just a minute before the end, sending the match to penalties.
Manuel Akanji scored the winning penalty for City after Silva had missed an earlier attempt in the shootout.
City claimed the trophy for the first time since 2019, breaking their streak of losses in Community Shield matches, including defeats to Arsenal last season, Liverpool in 2022, and Leicester City in 2021.
