The ex-Manchester City midfielder played 82 games for his country.
Germany captain Ilkay Gundogan has announced he is retiring from international football.
The 33-year-old shared his decision in a statement on social media. This came just over a month after leading Germany in the European Championship, where they were knocked out in the quarter-finals by Spain, who went on to win the tournament.
The former Manchester City midfielder played 82 games for Germany since making his debut in 2011.
“After thinking about it for a few weeks, I’ve decided it’s time to end my national team career,” he said.
He added: “The highlight for me was definitely leading the team as captain at our home European Championships last summer! After all these years, we finally made the nation proud again — I’m really happy I could be a part of that.”
Gundogan, who is considering leaving Barcelona this summer, mentioned feeling “tired in my body and mind” before the start of Euro 2024.
He concluded: “I’ll definitely keep being a fan of this national team and I really hope we can keep improving. With our great coach, strong team, and good team spirit, we can be strong contenders for the 2026 World Cup.”
Manchester City is reportedly interested in signing Gundogan, who won five Premier League titles, two FA Cups, and one Champions League during his six years in Manchester.
He joined Barcelona last summer on a free transfer but is thinking about his future at the club after just one season.
