The Argentine player has signed a five-year deal with the Spanish capital club.
Atlético Madrid have finalized the signing of Julián Álvarez from Manchester City.
Earlier this month, The Athletic reported that City had accepted an offer from Atlético worth up to €95 million (£81.8m; $104m) for the 24-year-old Argentine, who then agreed on personal terms with the club.
“The club has reached an agreement with Manchester City for the transfer of the Argentine forward, who has signed a contract for the next six seasons,” Atlético said in a statement.
Julián Álvarez has signed a five-year contract with Atlético Madrid.
The departure of the Argentine international marks a record sale for Manchester City, earning them a significant profit on the £14 million they paid to acquire him from River Plate in 2022.
During his two-and-a-half years at City, Álvarez won two Premier League titles, the FA Cup, and the Champions League. Last season, the versatile forward made 54 appearances across all competitions, contributing 19 goals and 13 assists. In total, he scored 36 goals in 103 matches for the English side.
Álvarez also played a key role in Argentina’s victory at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar and has won the Copa América twice. After representing Argentina in the Copa América earlier this summer, Álvarez was part of the Under-23 team that was knocked out of the Olympic Games at the quarter-final stage.
The forward joins Atlético following the club’s decision to let Álvaro Morata move to Milan, while Memphis Depay departed at the end of his contract.
Álvarez becomes Atlético’s third summer signing, following the arrival of defender Robin Le Normand from Real Sociedad and striker Alexander Sørloth from Villarreal.
