There have been talks for some time now about Joshua Kimmich becoming the captain of the German national football team. His Bayern Munich teammate, Manuel Neuer, held the captaincy for seven years before retiring a couple of weeks ago. Now, at 29 years old, Kimmich seems to be the likely candidate to step into that role.
When Bayern coach Vincent Kompany was asked about this possibility, he kept his response brief, acknowledging that his opinion might not carry much weight with the DFB decision-makers. “I respect my coaching colleagues with the German national team,” Kompany remarked (as reported by Twitter account @iMiaSanMia). “There’s a process going on with the national team. My opinion here isn’t important. Joshua is a leader with us. He’s been a great help to me here.”
If things go well, those early comparisons between Kimmich and Philipp Lahm, a legendary German captain and leader, might come full circle.
